Disney has revealed more details about the new “The Little Mermaid” stage show it’s developing for Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

“The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” is set to debut at the theater in Animation Courtyard later this year. The show is inspired by the 1989 animated movie “The Little Mermaid” and tells an abridged version of the story.

The new show replaces “Voyage of the Little Mermaid,” which closed in early 2020 and never reopened from Disney’s pandemic shutdown. For “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,” Disney will introduce a new cast of puppets, live performers and physical sets.

The new production will also have two additional musical numbers that weren’t included in the previous show—”Daughters of Triton” and “Kiss the Girl.”

Disney will also use digital content to help tell Ariel’s story on the stage. The team is using motion capture technology to bring some characters to life in a new way. Behind-the-scenes photos released Monday show the Ursula performer in a mo-cap suit. Ursula will appear in the show through animation and a live performer. Digital technology willalso be used bring other characters to life, including King Triton and Ariel’s sisters.

“You’re going to see these large new physical set pieces we’ve created blend seamlessly with a digital environment in a way that really fills the stage,” said James Silson, show director, in a post on the Disney Parks Blog.

Animation Courtyard will also receive an update to go along with the debut of “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” this fall.
