Disney changes DEI efforts in strategy shift

Walt Disney Co. headquarters in Burbank, Calif. (Disney)

The Walt Disney Co. is the latest company to make adjustments to its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts amid pressure from the Trump administration to dismantle such initiatives.

A memo sent to employees Tuesday from Disney’s chief Human Resources officer Sonia Coleman,  outlined some of the changes, according to a report from Axios

The shift, which will align the company’s initiatives with its “business goals and company values,” will include changing the criteria used to evaluate executive compensation. Disney is replacing the “Diversity & Inclusion” factor with “Talent Strategy,” which will access how well leaders uphold the company’s values.

Disney also dropped its “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative, which launched in 2021 to highlight stories from underrepresented groups. The corresponding website has been removed and now redirects to an inclusion page on Disney’s corporate site.

References to the “Reimagine Tomorrow” program were removed from Disney’s 2024 annual report.

The company also plans to modify the content disclaimers that appear on Disney+ before some of its older movies such as “Peter Pan” and “Dumbo,”  according to Axios. The current disclaimer warns viewers that the film included negative depictions and stereotypes.

Disney has been criticized by conservatives in recent years for its diversity initiatives, with many labeling the company as “woke.” This latest shift in strategy aligns with comments CEO Bob Iger made during the company’s annual shareholder meeting last year, in which he said Disney’s job is to entertain not to “advance any kind of agenda.”
