NBCUniversal, a division of Comcast, has been steadily growing its theme park business.
The strategy has involved building Epic Universe, a new theme park opening in Orlando this spring and creating new experiences in new markets such as a year-round horror attraction in Las Vegas and a kid-centric park in Texas.
Another possible addition to Universal’s parks: the popular “Wicked” franchise. A new article from the New York Times says Universal is considering doing just that.
In the article, Universal Destinations & Experiences CEO Mark Woodbury discusses growth in the parks business and mentions his reaction to seeing the “Wicked” movie.
“When I saw it, my first reaction was, ‘This is a theme park waiting to happen,'” Woodbury told the Times.
That’s not surprising given the success of the first “Wicked” movie. Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the movie is an adaption of the hit broadway musical. Since its release in theaters in November of last year, the movie has made over $727 million at the worldwide box office.
Universal has tested the “Wicked” waters so-to-speak at its U.S. parks. A pop-up shopping experience called Wicked: The Experience opened at Universal Studios Florida last November. It features themed rooms based on the movie, exhibits with costumes and prop replicas, merchandise and photo-ops. “Wicked” merchandise and theme treats were also rolled out at Universal Studios Hollywood.
The Times article didn’t reveal what kind of “Wicked” attractions Universal is dreaming up or where those potential attractions could go.
Meanwhile, “Wicked: For Good,” part two of the musical hit, will arrive in theaters Nov. 21.
